The Bible is our standard for everything. As a public school teacher on my weekdays, I think a lot about standards and expectations for my students. As a Sunday School teacher, I believe that, regardless of the age of the students, our standard for Bible class education is always the Bible. Because I have the unique privilege of teaching first and second graders, many of them are familiar with Bible accounts, but they have not yet figured out how to use or navigate their Bibles. That's when I decided how I wanted to plan my instruction for Bible class. I began to think of everything that I wanted my students to know by the time they leave my classroom. After all, when we think about how standards guide instruction, that's what we're doing...beginning with the end in mind. So what did I want my students to learn before they left me? Take a look at the list below. It's what I have taught and what I plan to teach (that we haven't covered yet). As I plan each lesson and prepare the materials, I will hyperlink the titles below so you can access the materials too.
- What are the parts of the Bible and how is the Bible divided into parts? (Tables of contents, Old & New Testaments)
- How can I find scriptures in my Bible? (Books, chapters, verses)
- What are abbreviations and how do I use them in Bible class?
- How can I take notes in Bible class?
- How do I find a scripture about a topic I want to know more about? (Using a concordance)
- How can I talk to God and how does God want me to talk to Him? (Praying)
- Who are some of the heroes I read about in my Bible?
